New Study: Poor Sleep Quality Linked to Premature Skin Aging

If you want to have soft, glowing skin like a baby, you need to sleep like a baby!  A recent study at the University Hospitals (UH) Case Medical Center in Cleveland indicated that the amount of sleep you get heavily determines your skin’s youthfulness and ability to recover from everyday stressors.  Sleep deprivation can increase the signs of aging in the skin and decrease the skin’s ability to recover after sun exposure, a recent clinical trial indicates.

According to DC Derm Docs’ Dr. Marilyn Berzin, “Bags under your eyes aren’t the only side effects a poor night’s sleep has on your skin.  Without the proper amount of sleep, your skin will age before your very eyes.”

The study, commissioned by skincare giant Estée Lauder, determined that those who were categorized as “poor quality sleepers” had an increase in fine lines, uneven skin color, and a decrease in flexible skin as opposed to their “good quality sleeper” counterparts. Poor quality sleepers also had more difficulty recovering from sun exposure.  Adds Dr. Dale Isaacson, “Getting a good night’s sleep can make a big difference in your appearance.  With the proper amount of deep sleep, your skin will repair itself and you truly will look refreshed and rejuvenated in the morning.”
