Delicious holiday meals can come at a cost to your waistline – but did you know your skin will suffer the consequences too? Sugary beverages and fat-filled desserts add up and your skin may see the worst of its effects. From tired, puffy skin to excess breakouts, the old saying “you are what you eat” can come true when choosing to overindulge. Fortunately, everything is about moderation. One drink or slice of pie isn’t going to do the brunt of the damage, but over time it can cause your skin to change. So this holiday season, be on the lookout for these three holiday indulgences.

1. Spirits in Good Holiday Spirit

Drinking an excess of alcohol can not only cause you to become dehydrated, but your skin too. Dehydrated skin can begin to look pale, dull and cause fine line to appear more prominent. Alternating between alcoholic drinks and glasses of water is the best way to stay hydrated while still enjoying the party.

2. Cookies, Cakes and Pie, OH MY!

Your body breaks refined sugar in decadent treats into glucose, which spikes your body’s natural insulin levels. Your skin’s inflammation results from the insulin spike and produces enzymes that break down collagen and elastin, resulting in sagging skin and wrinkles. Plus, the more sugar you consume, the more likely an insulin resistance builds up, which can lead to excess hair growth, and dark patches on the neck and crease of the body. While baking sweet treats for potluck dinners, choose refined sugar alternatives. No one will notice the difference, but your skin will thank you.

3. MOOve Over Dairy

Dairy can be hidden in all types of dishes at the dinner table. From mashed potatoes to quiche to green bean casserole, it can be difficult to see just how much dairy you are actually consuming. Digesting too much milk can drive excess oil production and increases the skin’s potential for breakouts because it contains hormones and growth factors. Instead, fill your plate with fresh veggies first to leave less room on your plate and stomach for those dairy-rich side dishes.

You don’t need to give up all of your favorite treats to keep your skin healthy during the holidays. Consciously consume indulgences and opt for healthier options in between party days.
