Style Without Damage

Do you love to style your hair but hate being left with split ends, breakage, and dryness? Beauty sometimes comes with a price and the way you style your hair can cause dryness, lackluster color, brittleness, frizziness, breakage, split ends, thinning, and sometimes even fall out, making you look years older than you actually are. But you don’t always have to suffer for beautiful hair. By following these simple tips you can have healthy, shiny hair:

Avoid too much blow drying.   After a nice long shower, dry your hair by wrapping it in a towel or let it air dry. Allow your hair to partially air dry before you turn on the dryer.

Handle your wet hair with care. Wet hair breaks more easily when combed or brushed, so if you have straight hair, handle it as little as possible when it’s wet.  If your hair is tightly curled or textured, brush it when its wet to decrease chances of breakage

Wash but don’t over wash. There is no need for squeaky-clean hair every day. Over washing strips hair of its natural oils and causes dryness.

Put a Block on Brushing.  Keep brushing to a minimum.  Excessive brushing can cause split ends.

Hold off on Hairspray. Reduce the use of “long-lasting hold” styling products.  When you do use it, don’t touch it after you spray — using a comb after applying the product will cause your hair to break and can lead to hair loss over time.

Straighten without Strife.  Use flat irons on dry hair no more than every other day, on low or medium heat setting. Never use it on wet hair.

Curl with Caution. When using a curling iron, only leave it in place for no more than a second or two. No matter what your hair type is, excessive heat leads to hair damage.

Keep updos to a minimal.  Do not regularly wear braids, cornrows, ponytails, or hair extensions. These styles pull on hair and cause tension and stress that leads to breakage.

Lay off the candy and junk food!   A bad diet can cause lackluster hair. Eating salmon, which is loaded with omega-3 fatty acid, green vegetables containing vitamins A and C, and nuts which are a good source of zinc can help maintain healthy locks.
