Move Over Ladies, Men’s Skincare on the Rise

You might be an alpha male, but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep your skin looking young. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the number of cosmetic procedures for men has increased by more than 100 percent since 1997. Studies also show that men prefer the non-surgical approach. With more men seeking cosmetic dermatologic procedures and products, successfully engaging and treating this segment of the population requires a better understanding of four gender-specific differences between men and women.

Skin Biology

The first of these differences is in skin biology. While men and women share a number of characteristics, there are some key differences driven by genetic or hormonal specificity that can affect treatment outcomes. Both sexes share the same number of cell layers and thickness of the stratum corneum, however the dermis is about 20% thicker in men. Despite having higher collagen density early in life, men also experience skin thinning at a younger age. Other biological differences in the skin include less subcutaneous fat, greater distribution of body fat in the abdomen and trunk, and higher facial bone density mass.

Skin Aging

Along with having unique skin biologies, men and women’s skin also ages differently. Men’s higher collagen density leads to better maitenance of elasticity, and their higher facial bone density provides better overall support. However, thicker skin and stronger muscles make men more prone to develop deeper expression lines.

Behavior

Interestingly, behavioral differences between genders is another characteristic affecting the typical cosmetic treatments for men. Men tend to be very goal-oriented, typically want fast results, and usually prefer simplicity, minimal discomfort, and minimal downtime. These desires have made non-invasive procedures and multifunctional skin care products ideal.

Rejuvenation Goals

Men and women often have different rejuvenation goals. The most common reason why men seek cosmetic treatment is for a “tired, sinking face.” They want to look confident and refreshed, but only want subtle, natural-looking results. Hair is another huge concern for men; some want more, while others want less. Men drive the market for for hair loss and hair removal treatments. In fact, laser hair removal was the second most common nonsurgical cosmetic treatment for men in 2011, according to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

These four characteristics differences between men and women have created the market for male cosmetic procedures. DC Derm Docs offers several cosmetic treatment options to keep your skin looking fresh.
