CoolSculpting Complications

These days, it seems like everyone is having non-invasive body contouring procedures to slim and sculpt common problem areas.

In fact, many women and men believe that treatments like CoolSculpting are a normal part of self-care and no different than other beauty services.

However, this is not entirely true. While fat-freezing is safer than liposuction, it is still a medical procedure with associated risks.

Continue reading to learn about possible CoolSculpting complications, and what patients can expect should they decide to undergo treatment.

What Is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a nonsurgical body contouring procedure that uses a patented cooling technology to freeze and destroy fat beneath the skin.

During treatment, a CoolSculpting applicator vacuums unwanted fatty tissue, holds it in place, and delivers controlled cooling through two panels within the hand piece.

Common CoolSculpting Complications

Although CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved and non-invasive procedure, patients should be aware of possible side effects and risks.

One common complaint about the treatment is that it causes discomfort. When the applicator begins suctioning fat, some patients report an unpleasant tugging and pulling sensation.

Others experience burning and tingling as the device delivers controlled cooling to fat cells.

Post-treatment CoolSculpting complications are typically temporary and may include:

Redness, tenderness, bruising, swelling, firmness, numbness, skin sensitivity, mild to moderate pain, muscle cramping, itchiness, diarrhea as fat cell remnants are cleared from the body, and a feeling of fullness in the throat following double chin treatment.

Most of these issues resolve on their own in several weeks.

Rare Long-Term Effects of CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting can also result in a more serious complication known as paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH). While rare, PAH causes fat cells in the treated area to enlarge and presents as a hard, defined mass under the skin.

The only effective solution for this CoolSculpting complication is liposuction, which surgically removes the enlarged fat cells from the body.
