The 50s are when gravity starts to take its toll on your skin.  The skin’s collagen and elasticity degrades at a faster rate than in your 40s and the combination of sunscreen, moisturizing, and eating a healthy diet will provide a strong foundation for skin maintenance.  Jowls, loose skin and fine lines make a pronounced appearance during your 50s and hyperpigmentation starts to appear even more during your 50s.

“Ideally, you are always incorporating sunscreen and sun protection into your skin regimen, as well as in your wardrobe.  In the summer, opt for those wide-brimmed sun hats, sunglasses, and light scarves to protect the neck area.  In the winter, never doubt that UV-A and UV-B rays are gunning for you when they’re reflected off the soft, plush snow,” points out Dr. Marilyn Berzin.

Moisturizers and sun protection will become your best friend in your 50s.  Moisturizing with a facial oil immediately after cleansing your face is paramount in revitalizing your skin’s delicate moisture.  Pick a facial oil and moisturizer that are heavy in antioxidants and sun protection.  Products with Retin-A and vitamin E oils are excellent in restoring youthful moisture.  Additionally, speak to your dermatologist about prescription retinoids for collagen and skin elasticity maintenance.  Light facial oils and sunscreen are an option for sealing in moisture and protection.

Treatments to try are dermal fillers like Juvederm and Restalyne to return volume to the skin.  Talk to your dermatologist about Neotensil to diminish under-eye bags.  Use Exilis to tighten skin around the mouth and neck.  Ask your dermatologist for their recommendation before you try at-home peels and exfoliators.

“If anything, don’t forget about your neck.  Focusing on your face is great, but if you neglect your neck, it will really add years to your look,” remarks Dr. Marilyn Berzin.
