Healthy skin never goes out of style. In honor of National Healthy Skin Month this November, follow these tips to refresh your skincare routine from the inside out.

Manage Stress

A healthy mind is essential to maintain healthy skin. Stress is the stealthy trigger of a myriad of skin care issues, from breakouts to chronic conditions such as psoriasis.  While avoiding stress altogether isn’t realistic, you can maintain healthy skin by managing your stress. Regular exercise is a great way to decrease stress and keep your skin balanced. Something as simple as taking a walk around your block can make a huge impact.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Getting enough Z’s does more than keep you from getting cranky. Depending on your age, seven to eight hours each night is ideal. While your mind is resting, your skin is busy rebuilding cells and rebalancing hydration. When you’re in the bedroom, stay away from screens for an extra restful sleep. Also, sleep on clean cotton sheets that let your skin breathe.

Eat a Healthy Diet

Take control of your skin by nourishing it with what you eat. Cut out crash diets that take a toll on your skin and replace them by eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Bonus points for eating berries, broccoli, oranges and sweet potatoes which are all great sources of Vitamin C, the MVP of skin care nutrients. Also, don’t hesitate to add avocado to your sandwiches or salads, the superfood is a great source of skin-smoothing Vitamin E.

Apply Sunscreen All Year

Don’t let cooler temperatures stop you from applying sunscreen. The sun’s rays are powerful throughout the entire year, even when you can’t feel them on your face. Protect your skin by applying a sunscreen that is at least SPF 30 everyday, rain or shine. The anti-aging benefits of sunscreen are unparallelled. More importantly, wearing sunscreen regularly lowers the risk of developing serious skin issues like skin cancer.

Moisturize From the Inside Out

Hydrated skin doesn’t just come from a jar. Applying moisturizer is a great way to keep your skin smooth, but staying hydrated is equally important. Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day promotes skin circulation and keeps your skin naturally repairing itself. If you prefer beverages with a taste, try spiking your water with lemons, berries, or even slices of cucumber. The refreshing flavor will encourage you to keep sipping while adding extra nutrients.

Get a Spot Check

Winter is the best season to get a skin check-up. Your skin is likely at its palest during the colder months, and therefore irregular spots that indicate sun damage or skin cancer are naturally more noticeable. Book an appointment with Dr. Isaacson or Dr. Berzin to get checked out by calling (202) 822-9591.
